End of the year

by Heather Steeves

Hey,
Thank you for following this blog. Thank you for being loyal readers. I am leaving The Maine Campus, as I am graduating. It has been an amazing four years; this one tops it off. We saw a huge budget crisis (which we’re stills struggling with at UMaine), layoffs, programs cut, some of our peers died tragically young. We saw a new MLK plaza, new dining facilities, a 24-hour union and President Kennedy stay.
It’s a year of starts. A lot came up this school year that will not be resolved by graduation. I wish UMaine the best of luck.
I hope I delivered you news you cared about in a timely, accurate way; it’s all I strived to do.

Dylan Riley will take over as news editor next September. Mary Emmi will be the assistant news editor. I expect great things from them, as should you.
Have a great, healthy summer.

Student/Alumni deaths.

by Heather Steeves

It’s a sad time, and we respect that. A large part of the campus seems to be in mourning. Andrew Gerke and Brian James were both young Black Bears.
As part of covering these deaths, we want to hear from you. Their friends. The Maine Campus is working to tell the true stories of these young men. Who they were, how important they were to their community.
If you would be interested in talking to us, please e-mail me. Heather_Steeves@umit.maine.edu
Peace,

Layoffs and tuition hikes: Kennedy and Waldron’s budget meeting

by Heather Steeves

Hey blog followers,

UMaine’s President Kennedy had a meeting today in Wells. He, and Janet Waldron who works in finances, spoke about layoffs, consolidation of services, stimulus money, tuition hikes, etc.

A full story is coming, but in brief:

Tuition will go up 6 percent.

At least 40 layoffs — a total of up to 100 jobs lost when you include not filling vacancies.

UMaine might consider losing the Computer Connection store.

State funding is down.

We will get stimulus money, but we’re not sure how it will be used or what campuses will get what amounts.

I’ll type up the full article tomorrow, but after a full day of Tweeting and figuring out how to live stream video to mainecampus.com, I’m exhausted. Thank you everyone who follows TheMaineCampus on Twitter — you made the meeting much more fun with your questions (which we then asked for you). The same type of meeting is happening Monday in Wells at 10 a.m. so if you want to come, do; if you don’t want to come, please send Twitter messages to us during the conference and I’ll try to make sure all your questions get answered.

Thank you again,

Student Senate does not want homework on weekends.

by Heather Steeves

Hey blog followers,

I’m sitting in the General Student Senate meeting as I blog. A resolution is coming up named “Prevent Online Course Work During Holidays and Weekends.” Check mainecampus.com tomorrow night to see if it passes and what difference it will make if it does.

Eastern Maine Medical Center’s employment cuts will not affect Cutler

by Heather Steeves

Hello blog followers,

I called UMaine’s Cutler Health Center today. Despite news that EMMC will chop 76 employees’ jobs, these cuts do not apply to Cutler.

The Maine Campus is watching job cuts through this tough time. If you have any tips about job cuts on campus, please e-mail me on FirstClass: Heather_Steeves@umit.maine.edu

Welcome to the news blog

by Heather Steeves

Welcome to the news blog. This is where The Maine Campus news team will post breaking news. This may also include summaries of paper issues. If you don’t have time to flip through and read everything, this is a good alternative.

So welcome and keep coming back. We will update more as the semester progresses.
